The Past
For a few decades, earthquake engineering had progressed through continual refinement of analytical methods, materials, and structural systems, largely driven by lessons learned from damaging global earthquakes. Early developments focused primarily on preventing catastrophic structural collapse, leading to the establishment of prescriptive seismic design provisions centred on the life‑safety objective.
